I was very surprised to hear that my good friend Sarah had been internet dating.She had been on a low ebb every since her boyfriend had run out on her the year before, no warning, no explanation, he'd just left her a note to say that he wasn't coming back. It had really hit her hard, understandably, and it was months before she would even go out in the evenings again. Eventually a colleague from her work had talked her into goingon a blind date, but it hadn't been very exciting and she'd decided to take matters into her own hands at last and try internet dating. She was a very attractive,bubblyyoung woman and couldn't hide away for ever. She eventually enrolled on an internet dating site but I must confess that I was very worried about it all. I had heard such scarystories on the news, read them in the newspapers too, and I wasn't sure that it was safe at all. She promised that she would be careful and always met her 'dates' in public places such as bars, so that she wasn't alone and in a vulnerable situation with a man that she didn't really know at all. It all seemed to be going very well, she hadn't actually met the man of her dreams yet, and none of them were particularly sexy, but she had a few pleasant evenings and it was better than sitting on her own in her flat every Saturday night. One night when I was at her house she logged onto the internet dating site so that I could see her profile and the profile of some of the people she'd met. The differences were amazing when you read the descriptions that they'd written about themselves, and then Sarah would give her own description of them, giggling. The man called Robert who called himself 'middle aged' and 'very fit for his age' was actually nearer to 60 than 40 and had to rest twice going up the stairs to the restaurant, but he had been very interested in wildlife and they had a good chat about the diminishing seal population in the North Sea! Then there was Tom who said that he had an interest in all kinds of music, who kept complaining that he couldn't hear himself think forthe awful racket,when they had gone toa local jazz club after dinner. It seemed that she was a long way from Mr Right, but was having fun in the meantime.
