Renee was having a lot of trouble with her boyfriend, Simon. Through someone at work, Simon had been learning about the swinging lifestyle. He thought it sounded very exciting and he was pushing Renee to go to a swingers club with him to try it out. Renee found it impossible to consider swinging. They had spent the first six months emailing and instant messaging back and forth and, hard as it was for Renee to admit to herself, their correspondence had been really erotic in nature. They both found it titillating and it propelled them, quite quickly, to wanting to meet in person. Although their thoughts and feelings had been sexually charged, Renee could never remember Simon mentioning swinging as something he wanted to try. They had talked about many things and both agreed that they were open to being experimental with one another but that was key for Renee - with one another. Renee was lost in thought when her phone rang. Jumping at the ring tone, she picked it up and said hello. It was Simon. "Hi babe," he said. Renee didn't say anything right away so Simon continued. I guess you think I'm weird or sick for wanting to do this but there's something that I don't think you're understanding." Renee got her guard up at that and said simply, "Oh really? And what am I not understanding about you wanting other women, Simon?" After a deep sigh, Simon told her, "Renee... I don't WANT other women. That's not only what swinging is about. Yes, people have sex in the club. It's a private club by invitation only. Only couples are allowed to enter together, no singles. We don't have to engage in anything we don't want to do there. There are no rules. In fact, some couples go there but only participate with each other. It's just exciting to them to be in same room as all these other uninhibited people. I just wanted to be able to experience that... and I want to do it with you." Renee sat quiet for a long time. She was touched by the honesty and sincerity in his explanation. Finally, she said, "Simon, you know I love you and you know I'd do just about anything to please you. I just don't know that I'm ready for something so... so... public. Can you just stop pressuring me for a little while and we'll see how we can work this out?" Now it was Simon's turn to be quiet. Then he said, "Fine babe. I need to think about this. I'm not sure how long I want to wait," and he hung up the phone. Renee sat, phone in hand, wondering for all the world whether she had ever really known this man at all.
