Last year I had become fed up with the whole dating scene. And everyone I knew had either already set me up with someone they knew or someone they knew from someone else. But each time they sent me away with the "he's perfect for you" line which over time became the kiss of death for the date I was about to go on. So I began to look at other alternatives. I knew some people who had met their current loves through online networking sites. So of course I joined every single networking site available. And after a few interesting leads I realized usually freaky people, stalkers, and just plain weirdos frequent those sites. And then I pondered the free online dating sites which my close friends said "No way, only desperate people join them." Well, my response was simply it had gotten that bad. So I signed up with a free online dating site. I uploaded my picture, posted some interesting things about myself, and hit the submit button. Immediately several people popped up as possible interests. So I began scanning through their bios. I steered clear of the typical candle light romance group of guys, ones that claimed there was no life beyond something called mudding, and guys who claimed they only wanted responses with pictures. I settled on one that sparked a little interest in me. He was five foot nine, held a degree in Psychology, had a nice job, and loved pets. I noticed in his picture he included his cute little dog. So I figured I would give him a shot even though I wondered why he was on a free online dating site. I responded to his email and waited for about a week before I got a response from him. We chatted for close to a month and then exchanged phone numbers. Once I heard his voice I felt a definite connection. One red flag was when he mentioned a candle light dinner would be nice. I just laughed and agreed ignoring that gnawing feeling in my gut. We met at a local restaurant and I had lined up an "emergency" phone call just in case. I arrived a little early so I stayed in my car watching for his black SUV. Ten minutes before our meeting time a black SUV covered in mud splatters pulled up. I cringed imaging how my Mr. Right was quickly becoming my Mr. Wrong solely by my own elimination methods. But I decided to give it a try. Taking a deep breath I got out of my car and we met at the entrance to the restaurant. Without saying a word he gave me a hug. And usually this would make me feel very uncomfortable with someone I barely knew, but it did not with him. Odd, I thought. And somewhere between the appetizer and dessert I decided I was going about this whole dating thing the wrong way. Maybe those candle light guys, muddin' guys, and "pictures only" guys on the free online dating site had something to offer. Maybe there were freaks that were just thrown in the mix to throw everyone off. And we agreed to go out on a second date after a final hug. I guess it's true everyday you learn something new.
